The deer tick (Ixodes scapularis) is a widely found parasite of many mammals in addition to the deer. Sometimes it delivers a payload of Borrelia burgdorferi, a spirochete parasite that causes Lyme Disease.
As a resident of Pennsylvania, with the highest number of cases recorded of Lyme Disease in the US per year, I have been victim to this twice now, so was inspired (if that is the correct word) to create this series of graphic images related this little beastie, centered around the bulls eye rash that sometimes accompanies the infected tick bite...
I am a visual story teller based in southern Pennsylvania, USA. Yes, twice diagnosed so far. Only once with the classic bullseye rash though. We have dozens of deer near us and we are picking ticks off the dogs, cats, and us regularly. This year seems particularly bad though ;-(
