Artist's Description
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Station
The small town of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is famous for having the longest place name in Europe at 58 characters in length. The name was created in the 1860s as a publicity stunt in order to draw tourists to the area using the railways although there have been settlements here since the stone age (4000-2000 BCE).
The other claim to fame for the town is that this was where the first meeting of the British Women's Institute occurred, in 1915.
The meaning of the name is "Parish of St. Mary Hollow of the Witch Hazel near the rapid whirlpool and the parish church of St. Tysilio with a red cave."
