The Royal Mail was established by King Henry VIII in 1516. The iconic red "pillar boxes" to deposit mail didn't appear until the reign of Queen Victoria, over 300 years later yet, together with the red phone booths, are an icon of Britain. The pillar boxes bear the initials of the monarch in which they were erected: VR (Victoria Regina), GR (George Rex) and ER (Elizabeth Regina).
On 12th October 2015 the British government finalized the privatization of this institution, ending 499 years of public ownership...
