Description
Colonia del Sacramento Rail Station Sign - Richard Reeve
Like many world cities, the UNESCO Heritage site of Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay has a large City sign for tourists to use. However, somewhat hidden away in the old town, is this original train station sign.
The train station was opened on 4-Feb-1901 and connected to the Central Station in Montevideo. Alas, some 80 years later the train had been replaced by buses and cars and so the Colonia rail station was closed in 1985.
The station building was repurposed in 2004 by the Insituto de Hoteleria y Gastronomica, to provide a new generation of chefs for the area!
