Although the maxim "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" was popularized from the 17th century carving in Nikko, Japan, it has roots some 2000 years before in China through Confucius. His teachings included the phrase "Look not at what is contrary to propriety; listen not to what is contrary to propriety; speak not what is contrary to propriety; make no movement which is contrary to propriety"
Either way, it remains a good practice for us today as it did then...
