Thank you Fran. Your interpretation agrees with my title. The splintered wood I had visioned that this old, square-type nail had been struck really hard into the beam, almost in an act of subduing the wooden structure. I would have added speech marks and an exclamation point to have it a harsher, "Nailed!" but alas FAA doesn't allow that :-( I am going through a bit of a "close up" phase at the moment, which always gets odd looks from people who wonder what on earth I could be taking a picture of :-)
