Description
We stumbled across this wonder of Nature on an afternoon walk in Pennsylvania. This the evidence of the Elm Pocket Gall (Aceria ulmi) caused by small mites from the Erlophyes genus.
The mites overwinter in crevices in the tree bark and then, in Spring, inject saliva into new elm leaves to cause these galls to form. The mites move into the galls and reproduce for several generations.
Although odd looking, there is apparently minimal effect on the American Elm.

Richard Reeve replied:
Thank you, Meg. It took a while for us to research this and find out what it was - a strangely beautiful oddity!
