Description
Carlsbad Windmill - Richard Reeve
In Carlsbad, California is a Dutch-style windmill. It is not a real windmill and has never ground any corn, but was rather built was an icon viewable from Interstate I-5.
It was constructed in 1980 and had powered sails that used to revolve slowly since, ironically, the Pacific winds were too strong for it to work in the traditional way.
Until fairly recently it was a banquet center and meeting place for the Chamber of Commerce, but when I visited in early 2018 it was closed for business.
Originally part of the Holiday Inn motel complex it now forms the visual focal point for the Carlsbad by the Sea Resort.
