La Grande Roue de Paris and Eiffel Tower
The Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1900 is probably best remembered these days for the Eiffel Tower, which remains as an icon of France over a century later. However, there were many other spectacular constructions built for the exposition and one of them was La Grande Roue. This was the tallest wheel in the world at the time (a record that stood until 1997 construction of Cosmo Clock 21 in Japan) and the carriages were so large that they were used as homes for families when Paris was devastated during World War I
