Description
Grito de Lares - Ramon Emeterio Betances -Richard Reeve
In the small mountain town of Lare, Puerto Rico, stands the bronze bust celebrating the role of Dr. Ramon Emeterio Betances y Alacan as the instigator of the Grito de Lares, Puerto Rico's cry for independence.
In 1865 he famously shouted that "no one can give away something they don't own" in response to the Spanish imposed continuing rule of the island of Puerto Rico. This was fundamental in fomenting the people's uprising and demand for independence in an uprising known as "El Grito de Lares" (the Cry of Lares) on September 23, 1867.

Thanks you, Meg. We visited Puerto Rico two years ago and loved the place. It's such a shame they are in such dire financial troubles at the moment.
